From the Kitchen Table to Virtual Classrooms: Why Effective Tutoring Matters More Than Ever

In 2009, I found myself in a new state, with a toddler on my hip and a deep desire to carve out a meaningful career, without returning to the traditional classroom. I had recently moved from Massachusetts to Kentucky, and while the country faced economic uncertainty, I faced a personal crossroads.

From kitchen tables to virtual classrooms, personalized tutoring empowers students to thrive, wherever learning happens.
From kitchen tables to virtual classrooms, personalized tutoring empowers students to thrive, wherever learning happens.

I was a certified teacher with years of experience, but every non-teaching job application ended with the same message: “You’re overqualified” or worse, “Have you considered going back to the classroom?”

So I pivoted. I took a part-time role as an independent contractor with an in-home tutoring company and started driving my little gray Acura all over the city. From elementary reading support to high school algebra, I showed up in living rooms and at kitchen tables with a clipboard, a smile, and a belief that one-to-one instruction could truly make a difference. And it did.

One of the first thank-you cards I received said, “Thank you for helping Tyus. It does make a difference.” That message stuck with me—not just because of the kind words, but because it validated what I had begun to see: tutoring isn't just extra help. It’s transformative.

Since then, my journey has taken me from living rooms to laptops. I’ve tutored students across the country—and the world—from Chinese kindergartners learning English, to U.S. adults brushing up on their grammar, to middle schoolers prepping for state assessments. And through it all, one truth has never changed: when students get focused, personalized attention, they thrive.

Why Tutoring Still Matters

Tutoring isn’t just about improving test scores. It’s about restoring confidence, reigniting curiosity, and bridging the gap between potential and performance.

In a classroom of 20–30 students, it’s easy for children to fall behind quietly. But in a tutoring session, they get the chance to ask questions without fear, work at their own pace, and celebrate their own growth. That kind of attention is powerful and more necessary than ever.
