Why I Tutor: Combating the Literacy Crisis One Student at a Time

I was watching a video the other day that described how more and more of our students are struggling to read. Unfortunately, this isn’t just anecdotal—there’s a growing body of research confirming the crisis. One article from The Hill notes:

“K-12 schools are seeing more older students who cannot read at their grade level, coupled with an international study showing an increase in U.S. adults who cannot read past simple sentences.” Read more here

I completely agree. And there are a range of reasons why. Contributing factors include:

  • Pandemic school closures and remote instruction

  • A disconnect between reading science and classroom instruction

  • The impact of poverty on brain development

  • Parents’ educational backgrounds and reading habits at home

The lack of literacy is terrifying, especially in today’s political and social climate. But for me, the pressing question isn’t just why this is happening, but how we address it. How do we meet the moment?

The Power of Early Reading Routines

Research consistently shows that early and consistent exposure to reading has a dramatic impact on literacy outcomes. Yet for many families, access to quality books and guidance on how to use them is still out of reach. Programs like Raising a Reader are trying to close that gap by partnering with schools, libraries, and community organizations to put diverse, developmentally appropriate books in families’ hands and offer strategies for interactive reading.

But what happens when that early window has passed?

For example, my daughter was a Covid Kindergartener—starting school behind a computer screen. We’ve always had a print-rich home, filled with books passed down through generations. But even with those resources, the lack of foundational skills affected her all the way through third grade. As a former third-grade teacher, I saw many of her peers facing the same struggle.

So What’s the Answer?

One answer that truly makes a difference is partnerships—real connections between families, schools, and communities. And this is exactly why I love tutoring.

Tutoring is a powerful tool to bridge learning gaps. It allows us to go beyond the general classroom and create personalized, targeted instruction. It invites families into the process. It transforms frustration into confidence and isolation into connection. It gives students a chance not just to catch up, but to thrive.

Whether a child missed foundational skills in kindergarten or is struggling in middle school, it’s never too late to intervene. It’s never too late to make a difference.

If you’re a parent, educator, or community member wondering how to support a student who’s behind in reading, let’s talk. I offer one-on-one tutoring and customized literacy support that meets students where they are and helps them grow with confidence.
