What Is the Literacy Lab?

The Literacy Lab is a small-group, literature-based experience where students read meaningful books, discuss important ideas, strengthen comprehension and vocabulary, and express their thinking through writing.

With no more than six students in each group, every learner has opportunities to participate, ask questions, share ideas, and receive educator support.

This is not traditional tutoring or a full English Language Arts course. It is a space for young people to experience reading as thoughtful, social, creative, and meaningful.

Engaging Books

Meaningful literature selected for each age group.

Meaningful Discussions

Students learn to ask questions, listen, and share their thinking.

Purposeful Writing

Students respond to literature through reflection, analysis, and creative writing.

Small-Group Community

Groups are limited to six students so every voice matters.

Weekly Rhythm

What Happens Each Thursday?

Each Literacy Lab follows a simple, engaging rhythm that gives students time to read, think, talk, and write together.

Step 1

Connect

Begin with a question, idea, image, vocabulary activity, or prompt connected to the week's reading.

Step 2

Read & Notice

Explore an important passage and notice characters, language, ideas, and author choices.

Step 3

Talk

Discuss the text, ask questions, hear different perspectives, and support ideas with evidence.

Step 4

Write & Create

Respond through reflection, literary analysis, creative writing, letters, poems, or other short written pieces.

Step 5

Reflect

End with an important takeaway or question to carry into the next week's reading.
