Project Snapshot

Growth Data Synthesis

Year-long coaching cycle that turned a 5th-grade teacher's i-Ready data into a clear, asset-based action plan and protected instructional momentum.

Scope

Year-long coaching cycle + end-of-year synthesis report

Audience

41 Grade 5 students across two classes

Timeline

Full school year, culminating in a 2-week analysis

The Partner

New-to-fifth-grade teacher and Grade 5 cohort

A teacher new to 5th grade was overwhelmed by a class with a wide spread of reading levels and the pressure to move students to grade-level proficiency by year's end. She needed a partner to make her data feel actionable instead of alarming.

What They Needed
  • A teacher new to 5th grade was overwhelmed by the widening gap between student levels and year-end expectations.
  • Monthly data was collected but not yet connected to weekly, targeted instruction.
  • The team needed an asset-based story of growth — not just a deficit list — plus clear next steps for the following year.
The Solution
  • Coached the teacher through monthly data collection and used each window to name specific, teachable skills.
  • Translated beginning-, middle-, and end-of-year i-Ready growth into a plain-language report with domain-level trends and a cross-class comparison.
  • Built a 5-step instructional response cycle: teach, practice, differentiate, check, respond.
The Impact
  • 78% of students (32 of 41) increased their overall reading scale score across both classes.
  • 44% met or exceeded Typical Growth, and 34% advanced at least one placement level.
  • Comprehension and vocabulary emerged as the clearest growth areas; the team left with a prioritized plan for vocabulary and informational-text comprehension.

My Iterative Process
  1. 01

    Listen and stabilize

Meet the teacher where she is, name what the data already shows, and reduce overwhelm.

  2. 02

    Clean and align data

Consolidate beginning-, middle-, and end-of-year reports across two classes.

  3. 03

    Find growth patterns

Compare scale-score growth, domain gains, and cross-class trends.

  4. 04

    Translate to action

    Turn findings into a 5-step teach-practice-differentiate-check-respond cycle.

  5. 05

    Debrief and plan forward

Walk the team through the report and co-create next-year priorities.
